WV-Letter to purchase mineral rights

My mother had no idea she was part owner of 51 acres left by a grandmother that has been passed down in the family. We had a company pay money a few years back to drill. Now they’ve found minerals and are sending out letters to all the family members listed to “buy” our mineral rights for $4,800. Firstly, we own mineral rights? Very confused. I’m not sure who I would call in Wetzel County, WV to find out whose name is on the deed for this land? It says Center district and gives tax map numbers. 51 acres, and each member owns approximately 0.8 acres. I’m not letting mom sell anything and I have zero experience trying to dig up information on land and minerals. We live in Ohio and if they found my mom, then her name is listed somewhere in a deed I guess?

whether her name is on the deed, not necessarily. The potential buyer may have tracked her down as an heir through obituaries or ancestry.com, etc.

Google Wetzel county Wv and then idx. that will send you to a website to check for your mother’s name or your grandmother’s name. that will list deeds, heirships or leases if these were done and/or recorded. You can click on the view and look at the document (most of the time).

Now, it may be difficult to determine how much your mother owns.
