Payne County, OK - Oil & Gas Discussion archives

Bob, for what it’s worth, I’m still pretty new at this myself. You need to go to the county clerk’s office in your county and look up your family’s deed. You will probably need a landman to help you though. I went through this and I did learn how to go all the way back to the patent date of the land and trace the way it was passed down. I needed the landman to calculate my interest though. That part was quite complicated in my eyes. It’s tedious work and hiring a landman was well worth it for me. My advice is do the initial search yourself, get copies of the docs at the clerk’s office and then hire the landman. That way you are pretty certain you aren’t chasing rainbows before you spend on the landman. With the slowdown it might be a lot easier to find a landman right now.
