Good morning. I may have mis- worded the title to this discussion.
My sister and I inheirited our mothers mineral rights in several locations in North Dakota and a couple in Montana. There are wells producing on 2 or 3 different spots in ND, but our piece of the pie is so tiny that it literally takes months for us to earn enough just to send us out a check for like $60 or so. I believe it is like that for all of us in my family that have ownership.
In Montana however is a bigger chunk that we own from what I can tell. At least it looks like the net acres we own have bigger numbers than everything we have in ND. Here is my problem.
My mother always had some sort of lease on these mineral rights she owned even before stuff exploded up there. I believe the leases were always for 5 yrs and then they would renew and send her a little check for that renewal.
The Montana stuff all I can find is a letter from a oil company to my mother stating what was enclosed in the envelope which was a lease for 5 years, and a bank draft. That was in 1997. Nobody has said a word about these areas since. The oil company whose name is on the letter head I can not contact, nor can I find a copy of this lease. All I have are copies of the bank draft that she cashed.
Is there a data base to access that you can just like punch in the Range and Township coordinants that I own and see where they are located and if any action is happening on it or soon will be ect.??? It just seems so strange to me that the ND leases were kept up on but these were not, and from what I understand the drilling is moving into the Montana areas.
Sorry so lengthy, and thanks for reading.
this is the montana oil and gas site link. http://www.bogc.dnrc.mt.gov/WebApps/DataMiner/
you can do a search with the township and range coordinates. If you'd like to post the area, I could check it out for you.
This is the GIS Montana map http://www.bogc.dnrc.mt.gov:4899/website/mtcbm/viewer.htm
There is a learning curve in learning to find your areas but quite fun as well.
I hope this helps.
Joanne thank you so much for responding.
Yes you I am sure could find out way faster than I could! It would probably take me all winter! (but I will still try).
But in the mean time whatever you can find out I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you so much!
Jennifer,
I looked in all of 16n-54e and I didn't see any active horizontal wells in any sections. Sorry. But I hope this helps.
I used the GIS map. Click on the county where you think it is and as you zoom in -it will start giving you the Township and Range and then eventually the section numbers. Horizontal wells are a red line , old wells are a dot or small circle, I believe. If you click on the I in a circle button on the top it will identify each well and give production numbers. Go out of Richland County and play around on the map and it will become a little clearer.
If you need any more help, I'd be glad to help you find the information. I'm just a newbie as well. Its kind of fun to snoop around and see what you can find.
Thank you so much. This helps a bunch.
