Who ultimately determines a well's name?

I’m curious as to (at least in Oklahoma) whether the company drilling the well, or the owner(s) of the property on which the well is drilled determine the well name? Or is it a combined/agreed process between the two?

I ask, as I just discovered that one of my mother’s relatives owns some or all of the property of one of the wells that we receive revenue from, and the well uses their middle name. In addition, they are also directly listed in the well permit itself issued by the state.

The Operator chooses the well name. Frequently the name is related to the owner of the surface land, but not always. Some companies use different naming conventions.

Thanks! Very helpful!

It is kind of fun to discover that a well is named after great Aunt Susie! Gives a sense of legacy.
