Todd:
My family controls the mineral rights to 1/2 section in Weston County. Not a big deal unless someone pokes a hole on it and finds something.. Not much activity in the past 90 years.. but currently leased as of about a year + ago...
There has been drilling and exploration nearby but no significant finds that I'm aware of... That does not mean there is no gas or oil.. Just no one looking in the right place. If you have any questions I would be pleased to try to assist.. although this is generally a get it leased then wait sort of a deal.. Best, Darrell Jansa
Hi Darrell,
Thank you for your message. It does seem with minerals it all is a hurry up and wait game. They either have value or don't based upon the current interest at the time in the location of one's minerals.
I don't have any specific questions at this time, but I very much appreciate you reaching out to me so quickly.
Take care,
Todd
Darrell:
In most cases, owning minerals cost you nothing but can be a hidden asset for the future. There are numerous cases in the major shale plays whereas minerals were dormant for years, some of which was sold and others which were included in surface sales, only to have oil and gas developments occur years later. There are factors which have contributed to these scenerios such as improved drilling technology (horizontal drilling, 3D seismic, etc) which drastically improved the recovery of mineral reserves. The North Dakota area (Bakken) was the site of numerous old verticle wells which have been plugged and abandoned for years only to have some areas turn into "gold" as the Bakken formation was developed via horizontal drilling. All said, what may seem worthless today, may be extremely valuable in years to come. It is just a sit and wait game.
