Earlier last year my spouse and their siblings learned that they have mineral rights in the Natchitoches, LA area. Recently, they were contacted about selling the rights. My spouse and I would like to get educated on what exactly they have and how to protect their interests going forward. Can someone give me a list of what we should be doing? Thanks.

The National Association of Royalty Owners (NARO) www.naro-us.org has a Louisiana Chapter. NARO holds conventions, town halls, webinars, etc. for mineral owners. The National Convention is coming up in November in Frisco, TX. The national convention is a great place to learn about mineral ownership in general, meet with many vendors who work with and for mineral owners, mingle with other mineral owners, talk with NARO directors. The LA contingent is usually highly represented there. Early registration is open for a discount. The LA convention has already been held this year, but is gearing up for next year. NARO has a library of useful webinars that you can watch to get caught up on learning.

When buyers start calling, it is time to slow down and get educated just like you are doing. Usually there is an activity reason and they want to buy low and sell high.
On the forum, you can ask questions by posting in the state and county where the minerals are located. Give a section, township and range and local folks will try to help. Go to the TOPICS area to start a new topic.
