Ok so my wife and her mother have done most of the leg work getting everything they need for their great great great grandfathers property. they even have a copy of the original “porciones” when land was gifted as wedding presents. We even have court papers from 2009 of some lawyer trying to take over the property but her grandfather was fighting it and won at the time. we can’t really make sense of the papers.
the thing is we called to Starr County court, tax, etc offices. one person told us that the parcels were “moved” which doesn’t sound right. they give us an address to a PO box almost 45 minutes away that belonged to her grandmother and the other address to a random house in town. a lawyer told us we need to find the address before they can do anything. from what my mother-in-law is telling me, her cousin is already collection royalties from his inherited land which has pipe running over or in it. He isnt much help since we have our own process to go through.
any advice would be greatly appreciated.
You need to contact the Starr County Appraisal District and ask them to provide you the property / parcel information they have on file. Usually they can print or email to this to you as a “property card” which is a summary of all of the information about the property. That will have a legal description, which is what you are really looking for. Many properties do not have street / situs addresses assigned. Every property has a legal description.
Who has been paying the property taxes on it all of these years? Assuming you own surface and minerals. You may need to check on delinquent taxes, update the mailing address so you receive all future tax bills and property notices, etc.

Thank you for the reply, we did go to the appraisal district WITH documented proof that my wifes family is the eirs. The appraisal district as giving alot of push back and said that the property was an address IN a neighborhood with a small house on it. which after some research shows as a house my mother-n-laws grandmother lived in at one time. Heres the thing, they say that the taxes is delinquient for that property. BUT it appears as the house is currently occupied BY SOMEONE.
this is all after the appraisal district told us that ALL the “porciones” were “broken up” and where the house is on the map is nowhere near the original lot on the map we have. we know that there was a lawyer trying to acquire the land from my wife’s great grandfather by means of the courts. and we do see the same name on current parcel maps. so, we’re wondering if he finally got ahold of it since her grandfather’s passing. or if the county doesn’t want us to get the land back.
even with all the documentation we have the county was NOT working with us. so, its kind of hard to prove anything. Also after speaking with a title company in starr county trying to get information they told us file for it was sealed. Is that normal?
sorry the new info im just remembering.
Have you tried www.Texasfile.com to see if there is any information there? It is free to look. Small fee to print.
