I have zero experience in California (as most people don’t) when it comes to oil and gas, but has anyone out there worked Sacramento County or know the best options for records research? Thank you!
I don’t know about that specific county but the one time I had to try and research public records in California they had nothing online due to “privacy concerns” so you had to mail them a letter with parcel numbers and they would mail you back information if they had it.
The Sacramento County Recorder is online with records for, I believe, the last 50 years or so. Prior to that, it requires on-site reviews. I am not sure about judicial records.
James, is this the correct link?

That is it, back to 1849. I was just answering quickly before. Looks like only index data is available online. No document view.
I checked with a landman from CA and he said you might have to consult a title company. Not as easy in CA as TX or OK.
