Retrospective Mineral Appraisal for Capital Gains

We recently sold our mineral rights and will need to file capital gains taxes. We never got our mineral rights appraised when we inherited them and now need to know the tax basis. Does anyone know a mineral appraiser that can retrospectively establish the value of the mineral rights back when we inherited them?

You can observe qualified professionals (often with localized expertise) who provide services to mineral owners right here on The Mineral Rights Forum. You will notice them among 3 different instances on the site:

  • in display image ads and/or brief text messaging on site

  • in our Mineral Service Provider Directory in the main navigation above. These are arranged by professional discipline.

  • as a Business Member participating in many conversations throughout the site (note the blue colored “B” on their picture and blue text on their posts).

These practitioners are often able to provide the specific (and often localized) services that meet your needs.

Thank you! I also just googled “Retrospective Mineral Appraisal” and got a bunch of results that way as well.

If you want to watch a webinar to get familiar with the process, NARO (National Association of Royalty owners) Colorado chapter just had gave a webinar on this topic this week. It will be posted on the main NARO website in about a week. This will give you a good overview how the evaluations are done. Then you will be ready with your data and any questions.

"CO NARO is hosting a webinar on Wednesday July 28, 2021 at 7pm CDT on how minerals are valued. Rob Prentice is the main speaker. I heard him give this presentation at NARO a couple of years ago and it was quite helpful. You can sign up on the main NARO website. www.NARO-US.org "

The webinar is free for NARO members but you do have to register online in order to get the logon link. Non-members are $25.00." From another post in the NARO area of the forum.
