I keep getting these letters/registration notices from the Oklahoma Mineral Owners Registry asking me to pay them an annual fee to register my informations with them. They are charging an annual fee of $44. Is this a legitimate request and is anyone else registering their information for their mineral rights with this organization? Is it really necesary or useful? Your commens ae welcome.
I gave a talk one time to about 30 landmen. In the crowd were guys/ladies who had their own lease brokerage, guys who worked for brokers, and in-house landmen. I asked the crowd how many have ever searched the mineral owner registry. Nobody raised their hands. I asked if anybody knew of anybody who ever used the registry. Nobody knew of anybody who had ever used it.
It’s certainly possible a landman would use it to find somebody, but my experience and one-time poll suggest that nobody searches the registry.
I also have been receiving similar Oklahoma MOR notices for years. My take is if they found me (mineral rights owner), obviously my info is already out there for anyone else interested in the leasing/buying mineral interests business. Just a question if you care to answer, what county do you have interests in, Caddo Co. for me.
The official registry is the county courthouse. The OK Mineral Owners Registry is a for-profit group which to my knowledge land men do not use.
The Registry showed up at least 30 years ago and gives false hopes that out there in Oklahoma there are people looking for you to give you money. I have been doing this since 1960, and use to ask the landmen, etc, if they ever used the Registery and no one ever used it. This is my take on if Prodution Companies or Leaseing agents want to find you, they are pretty successful. If there is money waiting for you, as a mineral acre owner (Royalty Owner) you should probably be checking twice a year on the Oklahoma State Treasure Web site that is “YourMoney.OK.Gov.” Throw that “Registry” paper right in the (lol) round file.
I find the Mineral Registry useful as a source of information on wells being drilled/completed by county in OK during the past year, a list of what Pooling bonuses paid by county and TS in the past year, and I use the help desk for oil and gas questions that I do not know the answer to. As a small diy mineral owner, I find it is a good resource. The others are right, the landmen will find you. I get information that helps me better negotiate with landmen that hold most of the cards.
It is a scam. Pure & simple. DO NOT SEND THEM MONEY, unless you have more money than you know what to do with.
