I just found this forum and have a question. Our church inherited an oil lease, I believe near Kenmare, ND. (sorry I don't have specifics but can get them in time). This well(s) have been pumping for many years. We have gotten a $400-$500 royaly check and suddenly got a $55,000 check. Those processing our church funds are pretty naive about some things and I am just concerned that this was not a royalty check, but some other thing, possibly purchasing our mineral rights outright. Should we be concerned?
I'm not familiar with the law in ND, but there would/should have been additional paper work if the check involved a purchase.
Check the line items. You likely had a Bakken well drilled on the lease and are getting paid for multiple months from the new well on the check.

If the check stub says for purchase of and gives net acres in a legal description, I would be worried.
My bet is that it is a bank draft and not a check. If you would like to scan it and email it to me I will take a look and email you back and let you know what it is.

BTW, thanks for the offer, I will try to get more information about this document from the church next week and then may be able determine more.
