Production Decline

What can we expect in production declines? Comstock recently drilled on our property with initial results of 700 barrells of oil per day. I know it will decline, but I've heard anywhere from 25% to 75%! Does anyone have more specific information? Comstock apparently "chokes down" their production, but are we still looking at a 50% or better reduction in payout next year?

State county location, well name, formations, etc will help. The answer will vary greatly as all areas and formations are not alike in decline curves.

Choking down production is not necessarily a method to slow production. They may be using it as a method to ensure the well is not damaged, or to increase the long term production yield. It does not make sense to produce 1000 barrels a month for 2 years if you can produce 500 barrels a month for 15 years.

Yes, but surely there is a range we can expect. Is it a 25% reduction, 50% reduction or 75% reduction. The well is in McMullen county.

Sure, you can expect 100%. You can bet on it. Over what amount of time is the big question.

Again, it is specific to the geological formation that is providing the hydrocarbons. I’m not going to be able to help you on that one since it is not in Oklahoma. If you’ll provide the well name, location, and State someone should be able to provide an educated guess.

John - as a mineral owner in your neck of the woods I think you can expect 50% to 80% or more decline over the first year. Many wells decline 90% in the lower pressure updip areas of the Eagle Ford Shale. I have two wells not more than a mile apart and one declined 50% and the other over 80% in the first year. There are many factors that can affect the decline and ultimate recoveries of these wells.

Thanks, that's the general info I was looking for...did Comstock do your drilling?
