What is the proper legal procedure a driller must follow to negotiate a lease with an owner of mineral rights? In the past a landman contacted me and negotiated a lease to drill. Recently, a drilling permit had been granted without any contact to me.

Welcome to the forum. What state and county are you in? Depending upon the state, the drilling spacing unit can be a shape that is unusual. The operator can file a permit before all of the leasing is finished. It would be a good idea to contact the operator and tell them that you are not yet leased. Give them your address.
