Oklahoma tax drama

I own a very small working and ORRI interest in an Oklahoma well. I am a Texas resident trying to do the right thing. I have Ok withholding on the proceeds to avoid any OK tax penalties although some years there is no liability and recently taxes due are less than $50. My CPA will charge more than my measly refund to prepare a OK tax return so for many years I simply prepared it myself using their formerly simple forms and methods. A few years ago they went “pro” and now the forms are much more complex, a nonresident cannot file online plus must submit a convoluted paper tax return along with a COMPLETE paper copy of the US tax return - in my case 28 pages - postage OK tax forms is more than my refund! On top of that, non resident returns are backburned by not processing - according to the website - at least 12 weeks after 4-15 deadline. Not only that but the last 2 years OTC said my calculations were not correct - which turned out they we correct - so they simply stuck my return in some dark corner until I inquired about the refund when was subsequently resurrected and promptly processed.

Besides asking you to listen to my rant —- does anyone have any suggestion on how to efficiently file an Ok return at a minimum/no cost and avoid this irritation in the future other than selling the interest to avoid OTC tax debacle?

They are scam artist for sure. They are a problem ever year.

I also am a Texas resident with Oklahoma mineral interests. Suggest you check with your CPA. Our CPA files everything electronically, both federal and Oklahoma. No paper copies of anthing, federal or state, go the tax authorities. It is all done electronically. This year I believe the Oklahoma refund came in 3 or 4 weeks.

You are so correct. Your experience is exactly the same as mine. It is mindbogging for the small amount of money that I receive. Thank you for posting

Just got off the phone with OK TAP. Filed 3-15, no contact since. Turns out it is in suspense( note they did not notify me) - as it is every year until I call in July. Was told I had not sent OK 1099s… which is not correct. Every year they say they are missing something. Since I cannot file electronically as an individual and nonresident I have no proof I included it in the packet I was forced to mail. Resubmitting 1099s and should take up to 90 days to receive my $93 refund. What a waste of time and money. Maybe if I check a box to donate my refund to one of their choices they will just rubber stamp it each year and not drag this into infinity??? Guess I could then claim a charitable deduction on fed return! Maybe I am onto something here…
