Oil and Gas Royalty Rights of Deceased Relative

My wife received a letter from Royalty Company offering to purchase royalty interest in Mitchell and Scurry Counties, Texas. They specified the sections and block numbers in their letter. I suspect that these were either purchased or given to this family member in the mid-forties, which would be eighty years ago. We have not found any documentation as to this person’s ownership, but feel sure that this was acquired while working for a couple of different oil companies from 1943 to 1945.

Where do we start in trying to get any documentation on these rights? I also find a listing in the Texas Comptroller’s Unclaimed Property site that this is listed as well.

Start by basic research. Review the online records for Mitchel and Scurry at TexasFile.com for your relative. If you know that they died testate, review their probate file for references to properties since there may be other properties. There is a record somewhere since the Royalty Co contacted you and funds are held by TX. Good luck.

Thanks for the guide post you provided. I was able to locate a copy of the deed document. My relative invested a grand total of ten dollars, which has grow substantially these past eighty or so years.

$10 and OVC was a standard deed language. Glad you were able to find the document.
