Took a drive this afternoon the check out the status of four of Mitsui’s wells…
Whitaker 1H
Frac job has either started or is about to start, as a frac sign is in place on the access road. Can only see the “frac crane” from the road, so can’t tell if work is underway.
This portable water line runs three miles or so from the Whitaker pad to the Baker pad. It follows Highway 164 east to I45, then turns north and heads east again via a creek underpass beneath I45, then follows a county road to the Baker pad.
Precision Rig 584 is still active on the Baker pad, but they must be nearly finished since the frac water lines are in place. My assumption is that the water source is near the Whitaker pad.
Frac equipment has been moved onto the pad, but no activity yet. Mitsui has been filling the gigantic frac lake that holds the water for the two frac jobs. The two laterals are each about 6,000 feet and if Mitsui follows Comstock’s “formula”, they will need about 4,500 gallons of water per foot of lateral, meaning they need more than 55 million gallons.
This panoramic photo really doesn’t capture the scale of the lake. It is longer than two football fields and currently has 20 feet of water in it. Depth markings go up to 25 feet.
Thanks for the update. Mitsui has not permitted any new wells, so I wonder if they might be pausing drilling operations while they evaluate results from the wells they are currently frac’ing.
Some insights as a mineral interest owner who has an active lease with Mitsui… In November they renewed the lease and exercised the option after an initial three year term without yield. The implementation of any activity was slow. I believe they were hammering out details with Sabana/Vanna, who initially leased from us. The number of wells is now six, we have interest on one of these. The striking contrast between the scale and speed of Comstock, in example, is something I notice. No grievance here, as I have no knowledge of their plans or intentions. Who knows how they scale. I don’t have a clue. I know others have a notion because of the relentless solicitations for the sale of my interests. If it were not for this forum I would understand even less than I do about the subject!
In 2024, Mitsui E&P USA LLC announced the acquisition of 46,500 acres in East Texas from Sabana, LLC and Vanna, LLC. This unconventional gas asset will be testing and developing multiple horizons and will provide us with strategic access to the Gulf Coast industrial region. Our commitment is to develop this asset responsibly, with plans for full-scale operations beginning post-2026.”
Unless their plans change, it appears that Mitsui will be in exploration mode for all of 2026 before ramping up production in 2027.
Hello Group, New member here. In regards to the Lipsey wells off CR340, I have a unit just north of there, the Kretzschmar Unit and Comstock is presently drilling 2 wells from the pad site, PP1H and PBH1H. I visited the site last Sunday and spoke to the driller who informed me they were currently doing coring samples in the PP1H to see if they wanted to go deeper. Don’t know where they are planning to get frac water once they complete the 2 laterals but they appear to go 180 degrees opposite each other. I thought the pad site was huge as it encompasses over 8.8 acres and the road they built was partially paved and a full 40” wide.
1/10/2026 Update: Rig is still operating on the Baker 101H well. There must have been problems, as the rig has been there since October 3.
About 23 feet of water in the Lipsey frac lake and still pumping…white cap wave action on the southern end of the lake caused by strong north wind!
Several pickups were parked around the pad and I was passed by a C&C Energy Services truck, so prep work for the upcoming frac job is continuing this weekend.
Just curious about this Linsey frac tank, it appears to be only 2 miles from the 2 Comstock wells currently under completion at the Kretzschmar Unit so I was wondering if frac water would be utilized for their completion from it.
