We have mineral rights in Dawson County, TX that have been leased consistently but we haven’trenewed the lease yet this year. A drilling permit was approved awhile back and is still showing on the Dawson County Oil and Gas drilling site although it was our understanding that the permit has expired. How can I find out if the permit is still active?
Welcome to the forum. Have you looked up the actual permit on the Texas Railroad Commission website to see the dates on it?
Just filing a permit usually does nothing to perpetuate a lease. Leases that I use require “drilling operations” to have begun during the primary term. I would look carefully into requiring a new lease rather than renewing. You can probably negotiate better terms now especially if your lease is below 25% royalty.
