Hi there. My family recently found out we had rights from our grandfather. Everyone has sold theirs, and I am about to sign to sell, but I keep wondering if I am crazy to give it up. My portion would only be .41666 of an acre of section 11-3S-4W. So I am assuming that wouldn’t yield much. But does anyone know if that area is producing a lot and should I just hold onto my little piece for possible royalties? Just general thoughts and advice. Thanks in advance
Are you aware that Continental just completed a whole set of horizontal wells in that section? They buyers are trying to get your royalties that are coming in about June. Gentry wells. Horizontal wells deliver much better royalties than conventional vertical wells because of the much higher perforated feet. Even about a half acre may do nicely for multiple wells.
So new to all of this, so I did not know anything was going on. I found more data, it looks like there is not a lot of production in this area, from what I can see. But I am also not 100% sure of what I am looking at. I found records from 1958 saying it was drilled and then plugged saying Dry hole. So in anyone’s experience, does this mean that there is nothing there at all, or will they try again or in a different way to obtain anything there.
An old dry hole means there was a dry hole at that particular reservoir and it was probably shallow back in 1958. Jump forward 60 years and technology has improved. They are drilling horizontal wells in shale that are quite productive at much greater depths.
Thank you so much for that information. I think I am the only one in my family who is considering keeping my small little portion of this area which Continental is the operator of. Do you know how I go about making sure they know how to contact me and where to send royalties if there are any? I went to the website, but I didn’t see any clear contact information for my query. Thanks again for all the help.
You need to make sure that your name and address are properly filed at the Stephens County Courthouse with the recorder. You may also need your probate docs if they were from another county.
Contact the attorney for the pooling order and the Division Order analyst for Continental and make sure that they have the same information. Wise to do all three with a certified mail return receipt so that you have a paper trail. You may need it!
