You may need professional help in the form of a landman or a lawyer. However, in the short term, go on your search browser and type in Marshall County WV IDX. That will lead you to the land records for Marshall County. If it was in your mother’s or father’s name, type their last name and maybe the first initial. That should bring up, hopefully, where they got their interest. Then do the same search for the person from whom they got their interest. It will take you back in history and show the documents. Doing this will give you a chain and, hopefully, show your fractional share of the larger tract.
In addition or alternatively, solicit bids for the property. If you have competing bids, the buyer will tell you what you own and how much they are willing to pay for it.

And on the geology and activity side, be sure and find out if there is pending activity before selling. The probate answer is one value for date of death, but future drilling might indicate hanging onto it unless you just don’t want the hassle. Here is the WV wells link.
