How to find mineral rights from my Grandfather

My husband’s grandfather owned mineral rights in Paul’s valley. He received a bit of money every year (or however it is done) and then it was passed down to his several children and now there are several cousins who should be receiving a bit of money. He has never received any.

We were contacted by his cousin in California. She wanted our address (for mineral rights) but I have heard nothing since…It’s been almost 2 years. Wondering how I can find out about the mineral rights and if there is some deception going on.

It is more helpful if you post this in the state and county where the minerals are located. This is a high level category and OK folks may not be watching here.

You can look at the OK treasurer’s office (and the state where your grandfather lived when he passed) to see if there are unclaimed funds. A free place to start looking is at www.okcountyrecords.com (if your county is on their system) to see if his name or other relatives’s are listed. It only goes back to the early 1990s in digital form. You may be able to find probates of wills or affidavits of heirship. Search under the cousins’ names also.

If you post this over in the OK MINERALS and correct county and give the section, township and range, then we can look up and see if production has continued. No production, no royalties.

I was just in a similar situation, and found out the children did not report the death of their father, and those children were just cashing the checks each month! FOR 26 YEARS! Of course there was no ability to claim the back royalties. The checks were going to a person that would have been 130 years old, but there are no checks or balances to catch that either. What I found out by following this forum is that NOBODY actually cares about who gets the royalties except YOU. Do not take someone’s word for it. - get the hard copy! Thanks to this forum I have been able to get it all straightened out, a total of 9 separate mineral interests thru 5 generations of failure to change royalty owners!.

I can call his cousin but I would like to find the mineral rights claim. I know it is in Garvin county (Paul’s Valley). I need to understand the lingo…grantor, Grantee etc. Would those receiving payout be listed? Just trying to narrow down the search.

I am no expert on oil stuff, but my biggest head start was to get the probate records all all concerned, they are available easily and MIGHT even give you the answer in the probate proceedings.

It has been 23 years since his dad passed away (in California). So I am thinking I will have to painfully scroll down each listing to sift it out. The county is Garvin. Wondering if it will be listed in his Grandaddy’s name or the ones currently receiving funds. There might not be royalties at all so that may be why we haven’t been contacted. It would be nice to know, either way.

I will try your tips. Thank you.

I second M_Barnes’ suggestion to create a thread in an Oklahoma or Garvin County specific forum if you’re willing to provide the section - township - range. This will help identify any documents filed with the County Clerk concerning your family’s interest and also evaluate whether there are any producing wells.

You can search the following sites for the granddad’s name. You may need one or more probates to get the proper people in pay status: https://okcountyrecords.com/search/garvin#advanced-search https://apps.ok.gov/unclaimed/ https://case.occ.ok.gov/ords/f?p=1004:203 https://www.oscn.net/dockets/Search.aspx
