Hoot Owl Field

My family has some rights on T141N R105W Sec 10. I have noticed A LOT of activity in Sec. 2-Ross 13-2, Sec. 3-Stecker 23-3, Sec. 9-Peplinski 34-9 & Stecker 32-9, Sec.14-Brookhart 11-14 & Faiman 32-14 not to mention a directional from Sec.15-Schaal 22-15H going horizontal north into 10. I've also noticed that it is all Whiting. Do they know something that no one else knows? Production numbers? Any help would be appreciated. Kind of hard to get info all the way down here in AZ.

I usually check the North Dakota Division of Oil and Gas website, https://www.dmr.nd.gov/oilgas/ and am exploring the option of subscribing to their Basic Services.

Just for background purposes, 141N-105W-Sec10:E one/half, was leased on Aug. of 08 for a period of 5 years (which puts it to expire this Aug.) for a royalty of 15%, by Petro Hunt for Whiting.

Thx, Aaron

Here is the results from the NDIC. They didn't update their November production, and that could be that its shut in, however, they usually post that its shut in and list zeros for production for any given month.

Very Nice Snues! Where on the NDIC site did you obtain this info? And what does "shut in" refer too?

Hi Aaron,

That data is available with the $50 subscription to the NDIC. However there is free access to production numbers available, but with less details per well. here is the site to free posts https://www.dmr.nd.gov/oilgas/mprindex.asp

shut-in is when they're either reworking a well, or if the well is basically shut down for numerous reasons. This well, is still listed as DRL which means drilling. It's been quite awhile since this well was initially drilled, so I have no idea when they will change the well status from drilling to whatever.

Aaron,

there is another horizontal well drilled to the sw of your location. the results of that didn't pan out too well. here is the posts from that. The rest of the wells in that general area have been vertical drills.

Snues, I found the other source for production numbers. You're right, it only dates back to Nov. of 12. I will be subscribing to the basic services very soon.

But from looking at the report, Stecker 23-3 & Ross 13-2 look like they are producing better than the wells to the South. And the fact that Schaal 22-15H is aimed right for them........

Are you from the GV area?

Don't have any inside info. Yet in a general sense, let me add to what Snues wrote;

The Sec 15 well having produced only a total of 6 days, and still showing as "DRL" (drill) status, suggests Whiting has not yet fractured this horizontal one. A few companies wait until spring to frac, perhaps that is what they're doing. However this was a 'test' horizontal well into the Red River formation (same formation their other vertical wells are drilled in). So it's possible Whiting may be carefully studying their cores before they do the frac. Horizontal wells are far more expensive to drill and fracking is a large part of the cost. So no doubt they are being careful since they're using this well to help decide if more horizontal wells would be economical.

The horizontal "Nistler" well down in Sec 25 is different. It targeted the Three Forks formation. That well was a dry hole, confirming the Three Forks isn't productive that far west. Yet Whiting can't really use their experience on that well to assess the prospects of this horizontal Red River well in Sec 15. Whiting's vertical wells confirm they have Red River production in the area. The company will continue to drill more. Their question is which type. Do they switch to these $$ horizontals which 'potentially' recover more oil, or stick with the cheaper yet less effecient verticals. I suspect this is why we're seeing the delay... or their horizontal cores have little or no oil shows and they're taking their time releasing that bad news. Is this glass half full, or half empty? Time will tell.

Thanks for the insight Eastern MT. Make a lot of sense as to what it looks like they are doing.

Aaron, December production results are posted, all zeros yet. Not sure why they didn't post November.

Eastern MT, the date posted on the file shows 6/29/2012. Start of summer, if a horizontal takes 4 to 5 weeks to drill, they would have still had plenty of summer weather to frac. I haven't read the file, to see if they attempted fracking.

Whiting might be 0-2 in horizontals in that vicinity, but on the February dockets, i see they're spacing for another horizontal, along with two verticals all within one section. Interesting strategy, not sure why they've gone that route.
