My mother and her family own the mineral rights along with others where Chesapeake has built gas plants. They are being told that no profit to speak of is being made . I am unsure that my mom clearly understands that there is a profit. Is she able to renegotiate the lease? How do I find out exactly what the lease agreements are so I may help her understand as she is not real forthcoming. I believe her and siblings are being taken advantage of .
You would probably have a better chance of getting an answer if you post in the county and state where you have the rights. This category is too general.
A possible short answer is that your family owns the mineral rights which have been severed from the surface rights. The folks who have the surface rights have a surface lease for the gas plants. The lease or a memorandum of lease should be on file in the county where the mineral rights are located. Some of them are digital and can be looked up. Others need a personal visit.
