Global Geophysical Services, Inc., is requesting permission on conduct a geophysical survey on my land. What are the drawbacks, if any, in granting permission?
Dear Ms. Balderas,
Do you own surface only, minerals only or surface and a portion of the minerals?
Also, is your tract greater than 60 acres?
I own surface and mineral right to 90+ acres
Dear Ms. Balderas,
Since you own the surface and all the minerals, you are in total control of your land. Also, since you lands are larger than 60 acres, you have significant enough lands to where the geophysical company does not want to go around your tract.
The upside of granting a permit is that the geophysical company will gather data on your property and down the road after the data is processed, geoscientists will evaluate the potential of your lands for oil and gas production.
The downside can be great. Damage to your land, damage to your water well and no lease, no production.
My knee jerk suggestion would be to try to lease your lands to them first. Failing that, a permit.

Thank you for your advise, Mr. Cotten. My situation is a bit tricky in that my property is within the city limits of Catarina, Dimmit County, Texas. While Catarina is currently a ghost town, I don’t expect it to remain so. In my humble opinion, it’s develpment should be environmentally friendly and orderly.
Dear Ms. Balderas,
The best way to ensure that this happens is to contain restrictive language in the lease/permit.

Hope, John Armstrong, from Big Wells. Your fellow classmate at Carrizo Springs. I have 72 mineral acres in the town of Big Wells and about 250 just to the north of town and about 275 acres about two miles north of the Dimmit county line over in Zavala county. This would be on the east side of the road from Big Wells to Uvalde. Most of this area is leased and the Nance’s (Jim Bob & John) got $1,500 per acre. I am working with John Petry’s office to get this leased for my brother and me. The going rate of royalty is 25% which is much higher than it use to be. There is a lot of action around Caterina per the Texas Railroad Commission website.
Hi John, wish I had answered this email a whole lot sooner when I was still in Dallas. I have retired and moved to San Antonio; I will be driving to Dimmit County later this week to look things over at my property in Catarina. Have you been down to that area lately? You will not recognize the area . . . John Petry's family home is now a restaurant, Carrizo Springs' population is 47,000 and Catarina is growing by leaps and bounds. We reach Catarina by driving South on I35 and then connecting to Highway 83 via farm road 133. The development off of 133 is unbelievable, John, if you haven't been there lately, you honestly should go.
