Is anyone keeping up on geothermal fracking technologies/opportunities? Enhanced geothermal systems draw upon oil and gas fracking technologies and expertise and produce electricity from the hot water (700 degrees Fahrenheit). Here’s a Time magazine interview that covers the basics.
I raise the issue because, as with pore space, it is unclear who owns the heat. As things stand now in California, Hawaii, and New Mexico, the mineral owner owns the heat; in Texas, it’s the surface owner; and in Wyoming, it’s whoever has the water rights. This sounds like a mess.
At the moment, geothermal fracking is not happening in traditional oil and gas areas, but as the technology improves, this could change.
