Word is that there will be a lot of drilling for oil going on around the Westby and Plentywood Montana areas for te summer of 2011. Has anyone else heard this?
We own mineral rights in Sheridan county and have been informed there is a hearing this Thursday for a spacing permit.
Deann:
You should study texas oil and see that the spacing is decided by the Texas Railroad Commission on each unit. Here in Montana you should have some say on the size of the permitted spacing unit, if i were you, I would attend this meeting. The Montana Board of Oil and Gas sets a certain size for all units unless their are special circumstances.
Dennis:
We also have mineral rights in Sheridan County and was recently contacted via Federal Express mail that Marathon was applying for a spacing unit on our area which is located in T31N;R59E. I contacted Marathon and they informed me that they planned to drill several wells in this area. Also, they stated that both Sheidan and Roosevelt Counties should become very active later this year and in 2012. I believe that the border areas of Montana/ND will see alot of activity in the next couple of years especially if several good wells are completed.
What website will provide information on the outcome of a hearing for a permit? Thank you
Deann:
The State of Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC)and then the Montana Board of Oil and Gas which is part of the DNRC. You may have to ask.
Deann:
I wouldn't worry about the approval process as generally all the legal problems, if any, has been resolved at this point. The worry should be in the areas of "temp. spacing to permit" and "permit to acually spudding".

After reading the notice again, I found it was actually for a temporary spacing unit, to drill a horizontal Bakken Formation well. I did not see it listed on the website under "Activity Letters" section. I guess it will be a wait and see. Thanks for the suggestions on where to look.
Deann:
As I said, you may have to ask The Board of Oil and Gas at the DNRC, they will respond to your inquiry ASAP. The State as a whole is pretty good on answering back.
We mineral owners in Montana will just have to wait until the party winds down in ND and rigs began migrating Westward. I am beginning to think that it might be later in 2012 or in 2013 before we see any significant drilling in the Eastern Montana area. I'm optimistic that we will see some very good wells in our area as time goes on and more drilling activity moves into Montana.
Motels in Wolf Point are full of Oil workers, can’t get a room their. Check your maps on location of Wolf Point. Don’t know if these are workers from border area of ND and MT, or around Wolf Point? Housing is few and far between for the oil workers. Have watched a few drill rigs move through Malta in the last week headed east on Hwy 2.
