Disposition of mineral rigths

I bought the mineral rights from a land owner who got them thru a will. However, upon his death one half was to go to a church in Illinois. But this church has since been disbanded. I was told the trustee of this church would control these rights. Is this true and where would the proceeds go since the church has been disbanded?

Good question. It depends on what kind of covenants were made for the situation of the church being disbanded. I am surprised nobody has reached out to you first. Its 50-50 here. Its very possible you could have 100% control, and its also possible someone could be tied to the church assets and would own that share.

Obviously your best bet is a lawyer. Hard to say more without seeing the terms of the lease in full. It might take a judge to rule who is the lawful owner of that half. New situation to me.
