My mother inherited mineral acreage in Hughes and Pittsburg county passed down from both sides of the family. She passed away in 2024 and kept some paper records but not all. Her minerals were transferred to her beneficiaries and active leases have been transferred on all but one. I’ve sent multiple inquiries both tracked USPS mail and email. Several months ago I received one confirmation back on email that the company had adequate information from me and would process the transfer to the beneficiaries. Can anyone help me with a better understanding of how best to work with the mineral lease company to close out this final transfer? Your inputs are most appreciated. Joanna
Most Oil & Gas producers have a “royalty owner revenue” group that is responsible for acquiring the proper documentation from royalty owners with whom they will be paying royalties to. You should go to their website and get their contact information. Email addresses are usually something like “info@oil&gascompany.com” or “royaltypayments@oil&gascompany.com”. They should also have a phone number and a mailing address where you can reach them as well. Be prepared to spend some time on the phone waiting to get someone to talk to, but this varies greatly depending on the company. The larger companies seem to do better than the very small operating companies.
The process for each company can vary but essentially they all do the same thing. You, as a royalty owner, must prove or provide docmentation that you are the rightful heir to someone who has passed away and owned the the mineral interest in a particular producing property. Death Certificate, Affidavit of Hiership, Copies of Trusts, Probates, etc can all be the type of documents needed. The company will tell you exactly which documents you will need and any signatures required will almost always need to be notarized. You’ll send them the required documents and depending on their workload, it make take a few weeks to a few months to get your inherited asset recorded in their system. You will get a new Owner Number that they will use to identify you in their systems. Write down and keep your owner number handy as they will ask for it when you talk to them. Keep everything they mail you in a file for reference.
