Answering Questions

I have noticed that there are many questions that go unanswered on this discussion forum. Is there a reason for this? Are there not enough people “in the know” to answer these questions? Or am I just missing something here?

You're not missing anything. This is a community supported board. If nobody feels like answering a question, then they don't.

For those who are "in the know" as you say, presents no obligation upon them to participate. Some members of this board feel as if it is incumbent, or some implied duty, for those qualified members to step up and answer every question that might be asked. That is ridiculous to contemplate under the current board structure.

I also notice many general questions asked in county and shale groups, which is not the high traffic area, If you are seeking an answer to a question of general nature or appeal, why would you place it in a low traffic area?

If people actually examined the home page of this board, they will (maybe) locate a google search bar which gives better results than the search bar at the top right of every page. This board has been in existence since 2009. 5 years. Most of the general questions have been asked. If people would use search function instead of asking questions, they will likely find their answer.

All they need to do is their own research.

For those who have very fact specific questions, they are better off getting real help by hiring someone. Many responses that I have seen on this board over the years are far from accurate.

Also, I think some questions get posted that obviously done no research, or are so lacking in information, they cannot be answered. For example, I have seen questions in the general forum asking for current bonus and royalty rates without giving the state, county, or area within the county. In my opinion, the people on this site are extremely helpful, but are more willing to contribute if they feel that the poster has done at least some research as to what is available on this site before posting their question, and gives enough basic information so it can be answered.

And, some of us really don't have a background in the oil and gas business. We only know how it went with us. But our experiences probably wouldn't do you a whole lot of good. We learn a lot of things the hard way. The best advice I can give you is that there is no substitute for a good mineral lawyer.

Dear Mr. Gill,

I think it is a huge value to hear other's experiences in the oil and gas business. For example, I have made a change in some of my paperwork based solely on other people's experiences on being cold drafted and having the lease recorded.

Without knowing how the underbelly of some companies work, I would have had no idea that such a clause was needed.

Some, like me (no matter how much Law and Order I watch), do not have a criminal mind -- looking for a way to take advantage of people with a trusting nature.

I will say this, though. In almost every case where a question was posed and answered, the question poser had enough decency and class to say thank you for the help or the observation.

Best

Thanks to all of you for replying…I’ve been out of pocket and have just now gotten back to this. I have a much better perspective on this situation now because of your answers.
