The kind of lawyer and state depends on the issues being resolved. If it is an estate issue as to the terms of the life estate and residual beneficiary, you need to consult an estate attorney, perhaps the one who handled the Michigan probate or the trust documents. A Texas oil and gas attorney can help you with what is necessary to establish title in the deed records. Then you can send the title records to the oil company which has been paying royalties to the life estate tenant.

How do we find gas & oil lawyers when we live in another state? The state bar association? And could a paralegl do most of the work, instead of a lawyer?
There are five Texas attorneys listed in the Directory above. I don’t know all of them, but the ones I do know are very competent. Can a paralegal do the work instead of an attorney? Maybe, but that’s the lawyer’s call. You don’t necessarily call a dental hygienist to do dental work instead of the dentist. The dentist hands off what the hygienist can do vs. what he/she does.
