Landman contacted me

The landman may consider themselves a professional and may be fine (or not), but the AAPL landmen who are Certified Professional Landmen (CPL) or Registered Professional Landmen (RPL) are very well trained and are held to the highest ethical standards. You can ask if their supervisor is a CPL or RPL and deal with them if they are. Many landmen are independent and are contracted to work for larger groups. You can talk with any landman, but when it gets down to a contract to lease, it is wise to get a good oil and gas attorney to review the draft lease and make edits. The draft lease is rarely in the mineral owner’s favor and needs significant work. You can choose to lease or you can wait for forced pooling. Here are some OCC handouts that may be helpful to you. Also, read the Mineral Help tab above.
