@dmbrown.pdx I agree the amount seems high for an initial review, but I do not know what work you asked them to perform. If you are talking a quick grantee search, then most landmen could easily complete that job in one day. That would give you a starting spot to base the next decision to go further. You can search Marion County online back to 1954. Prior to that, it is old fashioned courthouse work. Good luck.
