I think what is meant by public auction is minerals which are owned by the State. Both North Dakota and Montana hold auctions several times a year but keep in mind that the amounts paid are generally much higher than you would receive due to several factors. Such factors include no extensive research is needed by a landman and most of these leases are for a five year term.
