Tremendous interest in extracting lithium from produced water in Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana out of the Smackover formation. You can use your search engine to look up what Exxon and Standard LIthium (among others) are doing. Not sure if the interest has moved to ND yet due to the experimental stage at this point, economics and the geology.

There’s growing academic and industry curiosity about lithium in unconventional reservoirs, including geothermal and oilfield brines. But North Dakota’s role is likely to remain exploratory until Direct Lithium Extraction proves profitable and scalable in more favorable regions, economics, and geology.
