While it is a good practice to make sure one understands all tax implications of a mineral sale transaction, it is certainly not a given that a buyer will issue a 1099. I’ve watched or been a part of hundreds of these transactions over 40 years, and it’s certainly hit or miss—and most citizen sellers are clueless to the implications of this element of a transaction.
