# MCF at casinghead

Newbie here. What does MCF at casing head mean?

Hey, Katcan!

Two things: (1) Everybody here was a newbie at some point and (2) there are no stupid questions.

MCF stands for Thousand Cubic Feet (Roman numeral “M” for 1,000, “CF” for cubic feet). In simpler language, a cube of natural gas 10 ft x 10 ft x 10 ft.

That’s the “unit” it is measured by, like a “Barrel of Oil,” although some people prefer to use the “Cubic Feet” measurement because it sounds so much higher [“1,000,000 Cubic Feet” sounds much greater than “1,000 MCF”].

I’m sure plenty of others here on The Forum can explain this with greater accuracy, but as I understand it, “At the Casing Head” means at the top of the Production Pipe or Production Casing—the lowest part of the surface production equipment at the top of a well.
