Hi group, My tax preparer asked me the value of mineral rights I inherited in 1988. I don’t have a clue where to start! I’d sincerely appreciate any feedback. Thanks, Deb Williams County, North Dakota 157 103 15

Estate value in 1988 less all depletion deductions, down to, but not below, zero. Look at the estate return to see what value was placed on the minerals. At that time, would likely be very little if not producing.

Generally, the rule of thumb is 3 to 5 times. Earnings is the current market value. So you add up all of your 1099s that come in for royalty and then multiply it somewhere between 3 to 5 to see the current market value. But if you’re looking for book value, then the previous answer is correct related to what you inherited for less depletion, which are reductions on the fact that every year there’s less and less of it.
